Abstract

The article presents a structural-functional model of forming the tutoring competence of a general secondary education teacher within the system of continuous professional education, together with the results of its experimental verification. The model is defined as an integral dynamic pedagogical system that combines social demand, goal-methodological foundations, the content structure of competence, pedagogical conditions, procedural-technological stages, result-evaluative procedures and feedback links between them. Three characteristics of the model are revealed: openness towards the organisational environment, cyclicity and the cross-cutting nature of pedagogical conditions. The model comprises four blocks. The goal-methodological block defines the aim, approaches, principles and the distribution of functions among the implementing subjects. The content-structural block represents the four-component structure of competence, in which the motivational-value component serves as the foundation, the cognitive-content and operational-activity components form the working core, and the personal-reflective component performs a regulatory function. The procedural-technological block reveals six stages, of which the practice-application and supervision-reflection stages unfold in parallel. The result-evaluative block performs both summative and regulatory functions. The cross-cutting contour of the model is a complex of four pedagogical conditions selected by the criterion of manageability through continuous professional education. The model was verified using a quasi-experimental design with control (n = 30) and experimental (n = 28) groups of teachers. At baseline, no statistically significant differences were found between the groups across the four criteria. At the control stage, the share of teachers at the high level of competence rose from 14.3% to 42.9% in the experimental group and from 13.3% to 16.7% in the control group. The difference in gains is significant for the integral indicator (p < 0.001; r = 0.443). The results are compared with data reported by other researchers of tutoring competence.
