This article focuses on peculiarities of transformation processes in higher education of the USA. The period of the XX–XXI century is considered particularly significant in the development of the US education (elective courses, credit system, distance learning, academic mobility, labor market orientation). The typology of institutional reforms includes: the conversion of 1st and 2nd order, evolutionary and revolutionary, adaptive and generative, active and reactive transformations.
