USE OF SONGS AT THE CLASSES OF UKRAINIAN AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

Purpose. To explore the role of songs in teaching Ukrainian as a foreign language to Chinese studentsand describe methods of their use in pedagogical practice.Methods. To achieve the goal, an analysis of scientific and pedagogical sources was used, as well as the studyand generalization of teachers’ experience in using music and songs in Ukrainian as a foreign language classes.Results. Based on modern researches by Ukrainian and foreign scientists, the functions of music and songsin learning a foreign language (including Ukrainian as a foreign language) are outlined, namely: it contributesto better assimilation of language material due to the action of involuntary memory mechanisms; improvesstudents’ cognitive abilities, such as memory, through emotional and multisensory pathways; promotesthe development of communication skills; expresses emotions and feelings; promotes relaxation, relief,etc. It was found out that song material is a useful resource with which the teacher can make the learningprocess effective and of high-quality. Some requirements for selection of songs were determined, which should: meet the objectives of the lesson; help teach the material being studied; be appropriate to the ageand level of students; arouse students’ interest; have an appropriate duration; encourage students to think;be accompanied by appropriate exercises. Based on the positive experience of teachers and the author’s ownexperience, methodological recommendations have been developed for the use of tasks in the process of teachingthe Ukrainian language to Chinese students, including examples of tasks using specific song materials.Conclusions. The use of song material provides significant potential for more effective teachingof the Ukrainian language to Chinese students. It has been proven that songs can enrich vocabulary, improvelistening skills, pronunciation, intonation and rhythm of speech, which is the basis for the formation of foreignlanguage communication; to help improve grammatical skills, as well as provide cultural knowledgeand increase the motivation of international students to learn the Ukrainian language.
