VARIABILITY OF THE SPANISH LANGUAGE AS A METHODOLOGICAL PROBLEM IN TEACHING A FOREIGN LANGUAGE IN HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS

Abstract

The purpose of this article is the theoretical analysis of the variability of the Spanish language as a linguistic and sociocultural phenomenon and the substantiation of its significance as a methodological problem in the process of teaching Spanish as a foreign language in higher education institutions. Special attention is given to the diversity of language norms determined by geographical, social, and cultural factors, as well as to the influence of this variability on the development of students’ communicative competence. The study employs a set of theoretical methods, including the analysis and synthesis of scientific sources in linguistics, sociolinguistics, and foreign language teaching methodology; a comparative-typological approach to contrast the main variants of the Spanish language; and generalization and systematization of theoretical concepts regarding language norms and variability. The application of these methods made it possible to identify key approaches for incorporating language diversity into the educational process. The study found that the variability of the Spanish language is manifested at phonetic, lexical, grammatical, and pragmatic levels and constitutes an integral feature of contemporary Spanish communication. It is demonstrated that neglecting language variants in teaching can lead to limited language competence among students and difficulties in intercultural communication. At the same time, the study substantiates the feasibility of integrating elements of Spanish language variability into curricula as a means to enhance students’ communicative flexibility and linguistic adaptability in higher education. It is concluded that the variability of the Spanish language is an important methodological factor that requires systematic consideration in teaching Spanish as a foreign language at the higher education level. The effective combination of the standard language variant with exposure to key regional and social varieties contributes to the development of full communicative and intercultural competence. A promising direction for further research is the development of methodological recommendations and didactic materials aimed at optimizing the teaching of Spanish while taking its variability into account.
